Sufficient reasons
The country cannot afford the luxury of tolerance

Outstanding social scientists affirm that a full analysis of a concrete
reality must take into account the particularities and antecedents of
the
case. That is the only correct way to judge and arrive at the most
objective and exact conclusion possible.
It seems, however, that even among persons not at all ill-intentioned,
these precepts are overlooked when dealing with the subject of Cuba.
I say this in view of the commotion created abroad by the decision of
the
Island's authorities to arrest and try, with all the guarantees
established
by the nation's laws, some 70 individuals for confirmed unpatriotic
activities who were fully engaged in the execution of subversive plans
that
the government of the United States encourages against this country.
These are not militant affirmations à outrance, but flagrant realities
duly
substantiated before public opinion. In the presence of hundreds of
local
and foreign journalists in Havana, entire collections of documents,
graphs
and testimonials, more than authorized, probative, verify that the
so-called internal dissidence is the net product of the unfailing
eagerness
of Washington to destroy the Cuban Revolution.
>From official U.S. sources and through its Interests Section in Havana,
money, materials and instructions flowed to these groups, that were
artificially formed to operate as a fifth column to produce the change
longed for by the most reactionary groups in the northern world power.
Those who show mournful faces at the Cuban judiciary action against such
attempts should, in the first place, inform themselves about these
truths,
which have been made public. Then, in the name of the anti-dogmatism
that
they have proclaimed to defend, they should judge and accept, without
prejudice or preconceived ideas, such clinching arguments about persons
whose actions fit perfectly into the most blatant category of
mercenaries..
They talk about repressed intellectuals, silenced journalists and a
truncated civil society, ignoring, a priori, that those groups are
nothing
more than nests of opportunists and climbers, very far from really
creative, serious and honest citizens.
For those who worry and show alarm, certain historical precisions are
valid.
As a local colleague has pointed out, Cuba and its people, from their
first
attempts at independence, have had to survive opposite neighboring
coasts
that have not been friendly, colorful or even neutral. On the contrary,
Cuba has had to do it in the midst of threats, interventions,
aggressions
and permanent attempts from its powerful neighbor to curtail its
national
prerogatives.
More than four decades of economic war, terrorism, invasions, death and
mutilations should seem sufficient to understand that this Island cannot
afford the luxury of tolerance and passivity vis-a-vis those who support
and work to perpetuate this state of affairs.
The least that the daily victims of this deeply rooted hostility can
demand
is that their sufferings and their dogged resistance not be ignored when
assessing an act of legitimate defense.
Those who live with the edge of a knife pressed against their throat are
fully justified in retorting to preserve their existence. So persons who
misinterpret this reality are definitely wrong, and even become
accomplices
of these crimes when, deliberately or not, they overlook truths as
imposing
as temples.

Letter from Cuban intellectuals
Message from Havana to friends who are far away
 
In recent days, we have been surprised and hurt to see, at the foot of
slanderous declarations against Cuba, the signatures of well-known
members
of the anti-Cuban propaganda machine mixed with the names of some
beloved
friends. At the same time, there have been statements issued by others,
no
less beloved to Cuba and the Cuban people, that we believe to be the
consequence of distance, disinformation, and the trauma of failed
socialist
experiments.
Unfortunately, and although this was not the intention of these friends,
these texts are being used in the campaign aimed at isolating us and
paving
the way for United States military aggression against Cuba.
Our small country is more threatened today than ever by the superpower
now
seeking to impose a fascist dictatorship on a global scale. To defend
itself, Cuba has been forced to adopt forceful measures that it
naturally
did not want to adopt. Cuba cannot be judged on the basis of these
measures
if they are taken out of context.
It is highly significant that the only demonstration held anywhere in
the
world to support the recent genocide took place in Miami, under the
slogan,
"Iraq now, Cuba later". Added to this are the explicit threats made by
members of the fascist government leadership in the United States.
These are times of new trials for the Cuban Revolution and for all of
humanity, and it is not enough to fight aggression when it is imminent
or
already underway.
Today, April 19, 2003, 42 years after the defeat of the mercenary
invasion
at the Bay of Pigs, we are not addressing those who have turned the
issue
of Cuba into a business or an obsession, but rather to friends who may
have
been led astray in good faith, and who have offered us their solidarity
on
so many occasions.

JUICIOS EN CUBA
Razones suficientes
Sobre el derecho a la legítima defensa.
No cabe para la Isla el lujo de la tolerancia.
 
Los científicos sociales más preeminentes establecen que el cabal
análisis
de una realidad concreta reclama tomar en cuenta las particularidades y
antecedentes propios del caso. Insisten en que es la única forma de
lograr
juicios y conclusiones lo más objetivas y exactas posibles.
Sin embargo, al parecer, incluso entre personas para nada mal
intencionadas, estos preceptos son pasados por alto al abordar el tema
Cuba.
Lo digo por el revuelo que ha ocasionado fuera de la Isla la decisión de
sus autoridades de encarcelar y someter a juicio, con todas las
garantías
que establecen las leyes nacionales, a unas personas de probada
actividad
antipatriótica, y ligadas por entero a los planes subversivos que contra
el
país desarrolla el gobierno de los Estados Unidos.
Y no se trata de afirmaciones militantes a ultranza, sino de tronantes
realidades debidamente demostradas ante la opinión pública. Porque en La
Habana, con la presencia de cientos de periodistas locales y foráneos,
se
expusieron colecciones enteras de documentos, gráficas y testimonios más
que autorizados, probatorios de que la llamada disidencia interna es un
producto neto de los nunca interrumpidos afanes de Washington para
destruir
a la Revolución Cubana. Desde instancias oficiales estadounidenses, y a
través de su Oficina de Intereses en La Habana, fluyeron
ininterrumpidamente dinero, materiales e instrucciones destinados a
estos
grupos, que se fabricaron artificialmente como quinta columna para el
soñado cambio acariciado por los grupos más retrógrados dentro de la
potencia del Norte.
Los que muestran rostros plañideros por la acción judicial cubana contra
tales intentos, deberían ante todo imponerse de estas verdades hechas
públicas, y a nombre del antidogmatismo del que en muchas ocasiones se
han
proclamado defensores, juzgar y asumir sin prejuicios ni ideas
preconcebidas tan contundentes argumentos sobre personas cuya actuación
se
ajusta de lleno al más burdo mercenarismo.
Se habla de intelectuales reprimidos, de periodistas silenciados y de
una
sociedad civil tronchada, y se desconoce a priori que, en verdad, esos
grupos no son otra cosa que nidos de oportunismo y arribismo, bien
alejados
de una real actividad creativa, seria y honesta.
Para los que se preocupan y alarman, valen ciertas precisiones
históricas.
Como apuntaba una colega local, Cuba y su pueblo, desde sus primeros
instintos independentistas, han debido sobrevivir, no precisamente frente
a
costas amables, coloridas o al menos neutrales. Por el contrario, han
tenido que hacerlo en medio de amenazas, intervenciones, agresiones e
intentos permanentes del poderoso vecino por cercenar sus prerrogativas
nacionales.
Más de cuatro décadas de guerra económica, atentados, invasiones, muerte
y
mutilaciones parecerían suficientes argumentos para comprender que no
cabe
para la Isla el lujo de la tolerancia y la quietud frente a quienes
apoyan
y trabajan para perpetuar tan terrible estado de cosas.
Y lo menos que reclaman las víctimas diarias de esta visceral hostilidad
es
que sus sufrimientos y su enconada resistencia no sean pasadas por alto
al
juzgar sus actos de legítima defensa.
Quien vive con el filo del arma homicida al cuello tiene todo el derecho
a
replicar y preservar su existencia, y las ópticas que interpretan esta
realidad pecan de erróneas y hasta de cómplices cuando ignoran,
deliberadamente o no, verdades del tamaño de un templo.

CARTA DE INTELECTUALES CUBANOS
Mensaje desde La Habana para amigos que están lejos
 
En los últimos días, hemos visto con sorpresa y dolor que al pie de
manifiestos calumniosos contra Cuba se han mezclado consabidas firmas de
la
maquinaria de propaganda anticubana con los nombres entrañables de
algunos
amigos. Al propio tiempo, se han difundido declaraciones de otros, no
menos
entrañables para Cuba y los cubanos, que creemos nacidas de la
distancia,
la desinformación y los traumas de experiencias socialistas fallidas.
Lamentablemente, y aunque esa no era la intención de estos amigos, son
textos que están siendo utilizados en la gran campaña que pretende
aislarnos y preparar el terreno para una agresión militar de los Estados
Unidos contra Cuba.
Nuestro pequeño país está hoy más amenazado que nunca antes por la
superpotencia que pretende imponer una dictadura fascista a escala
planetaria. Para defenderse, Cuba se ha visto obligada a tomar medidas
enérgicas que naturalmente no deseaba. No se le debe juzgar por esas
medidas arrancándolas de su contexto.
Resulta elocuente que la única manifestación en el mundo que apoyó el
reciente genocidio haya tenido lugar en Miami, bajo la consigna "Iraq
ahora, Cuba después", a lo que se suman amenazas explícitas de miembros
de
la cúpula fascista gobernante en los Estados Unidos.
Son momentos de nuevas pruebas para la Revolución Cubana y para la
humanidad toda, y no basta combatir las agresiones cuando son inminentes
o
están ya en marcha.
Hoy, 19 de abril de 2003, a cuarenta y dos años de la derrota en Playa
Girón de la invasión mercenaria, no nos estamos dirigiendo a los que han
hecho del tema de Cuba un negocio o una obsesión, sino a amigos que de
buena fe puedan estar confundidos y que tantas veces nos han brindado su
solidaridad.
