Background:  The far reaching social gains made by the Cuban people are seriously threatened by the USA’s illegal blockade of the island. The blockade restricts food, medicines, oil, and many other everyday necessities.  It has been repeatedly and overwhelmingly condemned at the UN. We in the CSC show support for the Cuban people by helping to break the blockade with material aid.

Why do we call it the America quiz?  Because 'America' consists of 2 continents.  The so called United States of America (the 'country that has no name') has the arrogance to call itself  'America', which diminishes the status of the other Americans.  A friend from Venezuela always goes through the imigration booth marked 'American citizens' to make the point.  Please don't call the imperial power 'America'!  Call it that powerful country that has no proper name!

Some people think this quiz isn't very subtle!  Well the comparative social indicators between Cuba and other countries aren't subtle.  Of the millions of Latin American children who sleep in the street, none is Cuban.  This relatively poor country invests in its people to great effect.  Only one other American country (Canada) has anything like the free health care that Cuba has, for example.  With a fraction of the resources Cuba produces the same or better public health outcomes.

We do not think Cuba is a Utopia:  it is a society struggling with real problems.  But it does show us another way of conducting social relations.

200 millones de ninos duermen en la calle: ninguno es cubanoPoster in Havana.   200 million children in the world sleep in the street:  none of them is Cuban.

'And those who claimed the end of history and the final victory of their anachronistic and selfish concepts are now in decline and in undeniable demoralisation.'
Fidel Castro, 1999
